Atrovent HFA Inhaler is used to treat those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This medication belongs to a class of medications known as bronchodilators, which are substances that work to relax bronchial muscles and open-air passageways leading to the lungs. This allows patients who suffer from conditions that restrict breathing by allowing them to inhale more oxygen into their lungs.

COPD refers to a number of conditions that affect the lungs’ ability to properly intake oxygen into the body in some way. Patients suffering from some form of asthmatic COPD experience spasms in the bronchial tubes that causes the muscles to constrict and block the airways. Other forms of COPD can arise from damage caused to the lungs that make it difficult for oxygen to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both cases, this medication is an effective medication to curb the severity of symptoms and prevent the condition from worsening.

Note: Atrovent Inhaler is intended for maintenance treatment with periodic use and is not intended for the immediate arresting of episodic asthma attacks and bronchospasms. For options that are intended to stop acute episodes when they occur, ask a healthcare professional about short-acting rescue inhalers.

To start, it’s recommended to use the Atrovent Inhaler four times a day, inhaling two puffs each time. It may be needed more or less from person to person depending on the severity of the individual’s symptoms.

If you are finding this inhaler is not helping with symptoms very much, you should talk to your doctor about adjusting the dosage to best suit your needs. If you miss a dose, judge whether or not you can retake it as soon as possible or if you should skip the missed dose if there’s a small amount of time until the next is due.

Atrovent Inhaler’ side effects may occur within a range of mild to severe effects. This medication can provoke allergic reactions that require medical attention. Consult your doctor before using this inhaler if you are aware of any pre-existing medical conditions or allergies that may cause adverse reactions. Seek medical help immediately if you get Atrovent in your eyes.

Common side effects include:

  • Headaches,
  • Dryness and hoarseness,
  • Sinus pain,
  • Nausea,
  • Muscle aches,
  • Sizziness,
  • Blurred vision,
  • Fever,
  • Coughing, and
  • Constipation

More severe side effects include:

  • Intense dizziness and fainting spells,
  • Difficulty breathing and chest tightness,
  • Painful wheezing,
  • Painful urination or urinary retention, and
  • Sore eyes and/or blurred sight

If you experience any of these symptoms while using this medication, you should immediately call your doctor or another health care professional for assistance.

Atrovent Inhaler is contraindicated in those who have hypersensitivities to ipratropium bromide or atropine (or any derivative or similar compound), closed-angle glaucoma, enlarged prostates, and bladder issues causing a urinary blockage.

  • Insert canister of this medication into the inhaler mouthpiece
  • Remove the dust cap from the mouthpiece and ensure the mouthpiece is not being blocked by anything
  • Prime the inhaler by spraying Atrovent twice away from face and eyes
  • Exhale fully to prepare your lungs before using this medication
  • Place the Atrovent mouthpiece on lips
  • Inhale while spraying the Atrovent Inhaler steadily into mouth
  • Wait 10 seconds while holding your breath in
  • Wait at least 15 seconds before taking the second puff
  • Take two puffs during each use four times a day
