Product Description

Find answers to common questions about our product, including dosage, storage, and side effects.

  • Prazosin is used alone or with other medications to treat high blood pressure.
  • Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
  • Prazosin belongs to a class of medications called alpha blockers.
  • It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.

  • Take this medication orally, with or without food, as directed by your doctor, typically two or three times daily. If you experience stomach upset, you can take it with food or milk.
  • Dosage is determined by your age, medical condition, and response to treatment.
  • Prazosin may cause sudden fainting, especially after the first dose or when the dose is increased. To reduce this risk, your doctor will prescribe the smallest initial dose, which you should take before bedtime.
  • Your dose may be gradually increased. Take any new dose at bedtime, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit and take it at the same time(s) each day to help remember.
  • Even if you feel well, continue taking it if prescribed for high blood pressure, as many people with high blood pressure don’t feel sick. It may take several weeks for the full benefit to be seen.
  • Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor, as some conditions may worsen if the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be decreased gradually.
  • Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.

  • Common side effects may include headache, drowsiness, tiredness, weakness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. If these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness upon standing may occur, especially after the first dose or during the first week of treatment. To reduce the risk, rise slowly from a seated or lying position. If dizziness occurs, sit or lie down immediately. Your dose may need adjustment.
  • Serious side effects are rare but seek immediate medical attention if you experience pounding heartbeat, fainting, frequent urination, mental/mood changes (such as depression), or swelling of the feet/ankles.
  • Rarely, males may experience a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours. Discontinue use and seek medical help promptly to prevent permanent problems.
  • A severe allergic reaction to this medication is rare but requires immediate medical attention if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
  • This list does not encompass all possible side effects. If you notice any other effects not listed here, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Before taking prazosin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other alpha blockers (such as doxazosin, terazosin), or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.
  • Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have heart problems (such as low blood pressure), kidney disease, narcolepsy, prostate cancer, or certain eye problems (cataracts, glaucoma).
  • Prazosin may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can exacerbate these effects. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely. Refrain from driving or participating in hazardous activities for 24 hours after your first dose, any dosage increase, or restarting treatment. If your doctor prescribes additional blood pressure medications, abstain from driving and hazardous activities for 24 hours after your first dose of the new medication. Limit alcohol consumption. Discuss marijuana use with your doctor.
  • To minimize the risk of dizziness and fainting, be cautious when standing for extended periods. Avoid overheating during exercise and hot weather. When initiating this medication, avoid situations where fainting may lead to injury.
  • Prior to undergoing surgery (including cataract/glaucoma eye surgery), inform your doctor or dentist if you are taking or have previously taken this medication, and provide information about all other products you use (including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal products).
  • Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and fainting, which can heighten the risk of falling.
  • Use this medication during pregnancy only if clearly needed and discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • Prazosin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
