Additionally, it addresses specific stomach and throat issues such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
- The medication reduces the production of stomach acid, thereby alleviating symptoms like persistent cough, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing.
- Famotidine belongs to a category of medications known as H2 blockers.
- This medication is also available over the counter. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by excessive stomach acid (acid indigestion). If using this medication for self-treatment, it’s essential to carefully review the manufacturer’s package instructions to understand when to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take this medication orally with or without food as directed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily. If prescribed once daily, it’s usually taken before bedtime.
- The dosage and duration of treatment depend on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage may also be based on body weight. Your doctor may recommend other medications (such as antacids) for your condition. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, and consult them or your pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Take this medication regularly to derive maximum benefit. To facilitate consistency, take it at the same time(s) each day. Do not increase your dose or frequency without your doctor’s approval, as this may delay ulcer healing.
- If using nonprescription famotidine for self-treatment of acid indigestion or heartburn, take 1 tablet orally with a glass of water as needed. To prevent heartburn, take 1 tablet orally with a glass of water 15-60 minutes before consuming food or beverages that trigger heartburn. Do not exceed 2 tablets in 24 hours unless directed by your doctor. Avoid taking it for more than 14 consecutive days without consulting your doctor.
- Potential side effects of this medication include headache, constipation, or diarrhea. Inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.
- If your doctor has prescribed this medication, it’s because they have determined that the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, such as easy bruising/bleeding, signs of infection (such as persistent sore throat, fever, chills), or mental/mood changes (such as restlessness, confusion, depression, hallucinations).
- Seek medical assistance promptly if you encounter very serious side effects, including fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, or seizures.
- Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to this drug can occur. Seek immediate medical help if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

- Certain symptoms may indicate a more serious condition. Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience heartburn accompanied by lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness, or if you have chest/jaw/arm/shoulder pain, especially with shortness of breath or unusual sweating. Unexplained weight loss should also prompt immediate medical attention.
- Before self-treating with this medication, seek medical help if you experience trouble or pain swallowing food, bloody vomit, vomit resembling coffee grounds, bloody/black stools, heartburn lasting over 3 months, frequent chest pain, frequent wheezing (especially with heartburn), nausea/vomiting, or stomach pain.
- Do not administer this medication to children under 12 years old unless directed by a doctor.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly mental/mood changes (such as confusion), seizures, or unusual tiredness.
- Famotidine should only be used when clearly necessary during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
