- Bimatoprost is used to treat people with short or sparse eyelashes.
- It works by making eyelashes grow longer, thicker, and darker.
- If you already use bimatoprost for glaucoma, be careful not to get the eyelash medication in your eyes. This could affect your glaucoma treatment. Talk to your doctor for more details.
- Before using bimatoprost, read the information leaflet from your pharmacist and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Use bimatoprost once daily in the evening, as directed by your doctor.
- Wash your hands and face, remove makeup and contact lenses (put them back in after 15 minutes).
- Apply using a new applicator for each eye:
- Put one drop on the applicator.
- Draw the applicator across your upper eyelid skin, from inner to outer lash line, at the base of the lashes.
- Blot any excess solution.
- Throw away the used applicator.
- Avoid getting the medication in your eye.
- Don’t touch the dropper tip to your eyelashes or anything else.
- Use regularly, at the same time each evening. Don’t use more than prescribed.
- It may take up to 2 months to see full results.
- Lashes will return to their pre-treatment appearance when you stop using bimatoprost.
- Uneven results between your two eyes may occur. Talk to your doctor if this happens.
- Bimatoprost may cause eye redness, discomfort, itching, dryness, or eyelid redness. Tell your doctor if these effects worsen.
- Be careful not to get the medication on other areas of your skin, as it may cause hair growth there. Wipe off any excess after applying.
- Bimatoprost may cause darkening of the colored part of your eye (iris) or the skin around your eyelashes. This may be permanent. Tell your doctor if you notice this.
- Get medical help right away if you have severe eye pain, signs of an eye infection, or rapid vision changes.
- In rare cases, bimatoprost may cause a serious allergic reaction. Get medical help right away if you experience rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
- This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you notice other effects not listed above.
- Before using bimatoprost, tell your doctor about any allergies you have, especially to similar eye medications or to benzalkonium chloride (a preservative in bimatoprost).
- Also tell your doctor about any eye problems you have, including glaucoma, macular edema, iritis, uveitis, or if you’ve had lens extraction surgery.
- If you develop a new eye infection, injury, or need eye surgery while using bimatoprost, talk to your doctor about using a new bottle of medication.
- Let your eye doctor know you’re using bimatoprost before having your eye pressure tested.
- Bimatoprost should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
