Indications
- Tolterodine treats overactive bladder.
- Relaxes bladder muscles to improve urination control.
- Reduces urine leakage, urgency, and frequency.
- Belongs to antispasmodics class of drugs.
Dosage and administration
- Read Patient Information Leaflet before starting tolterodine and with each refill; ask doctor or pharmacist if any questions.
- Take by mouth with or without food as directed by doctor, usually twice daily.
- Use regularly for maximum benefit; take at same times each day.
- Dosage based on medical condition, especially kidney and liver disease, response to treatment, and other medications taken.
- Inform doctor/pharmacist of all products used, including prescription, nonprescription, and herbal products.
- Don’t increase dose or frequency beyond doctor’s instructions; won’t improve condition faster and may increase risk of serious side effects.
- Inform doctor if condition persists or worsens.
Side effects
- Possible side effects: dry mouth, dry eyes, headache, constipation, stomach upset/pain, dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, blurred vision.
- Inform doctor/pharmacist if effects persist or worsen.
- To relieve dry mouth: suck sugarless hard candy/ice chips, chew sugarless gum, drink water, or use saliva substitute.
- To prevent constipation: eat dietary fiber, drink enough water, exercise, may need laxative; ask pharmacist for suitable type.
- Medication prescribed considering benefits outweigh risks; many users don’t experience serious side effects.
- Notify doctor immediately of serious side effects: vision changes, severe stomach/abdominal pain, trouble urinating, signs of kidney infection.
- Seek immediate medical help for very serious side effects: fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting.
- Rare but serious allergic reactions may occur; seek immediate medical help for symptoms like rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Precautions
- Inform doctor/pharmacist of allergies to tolterodine or fesoterodine, or any other allergies.
- Discuss medical history, especially problems emptying bladder, gastric retention, glaucoma, stomach/intestinal disease, severe constipation, kidney/liver disease, myasthenia gravis, with doctor/pharmacist.
- Tolterodine may cause QT prolongation, leading to serious/fast/irregular heartbeat; inform doctor if you have certain heart problems or family history of such conditions.
- Low potassium or magnesium levels may increase risk of QT prolongation; discuss with doctor if using diuretics or experiencing conditions like severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
- May cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision; avoid driving, using machinery, or activities requiring alertness or clear vision until safe; limit alcohol and marijuana use.
- May decrease sweating, increasing risk of heat stroke; avoid overheating activities, stay hydrated, and dress lightly in hot weather; seek medical help for persistent fever, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.
- Inform surgeon/dentist of all medications used before surgery.
- Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, including QT prolongation, drowsiness, confusion, constipation, or trouble urinating; increased risk of falling.
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed; discuss risks and benefits with doctor.
- Consult doctor before breastfeeding; it’s unknown if the drug passes into breast milk.
