  • Ibandronate is utilized for preventing and treating specific types of bone loss, particularly osteoporosis.
  • Osteoporosis leads to thinner and more fragile bones, and the risk increases after menopause, with aging, or prolonged use of corticosteroid medications like prednisone.
  • The medication operates by slowing down bone loss, aiming to preserve bone strength and lower the likelihood of fractures.
  • Ibandronate falls under the category of bisphosphonates.

  • Read the Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet before taking ibandronate, following instructions closely to maximize drug absorption and reduce the risk of esophageal injury.
  • Take the medication orally once a month on the same date, in the morning, at least 60 minutes before any food, drink, or other medications.
  • Ingest ibandronate with a full glass of plain water; do not use other beverages. Do not chew, suck, or keep the tablet in your mouth; swallow it whole.
  • Stay upright (sitting, standing, or walking) for at least 60 minutes after taking the medication and do not lie down until after your first meal of the day.
  • Avoid consuming anything other than plain water and taking other oral medications for at least 60 minutes after ibandronate.
  • Certain medications and substances like quinapril, certain forms of didanosine, sucralfate, bismuth subsalicylate, calcium or iron supplements, vitamins with minerals, antacids, dairy products, mineral water, and calcium-enriched juice may interfere with ibandronate absorption. Refrain from taking these products for at least 60 minutes after ibandronate.
  • Take ibandronate regularly on the same day each month; consider marking a calendar as a reminder.
  • Discuss the long-term use of ibandronate with your doctor and continue taking other medications for your condition as directed.

  • Possible common side effects of this medication include stomach upset, diarrhea, pain in arms/legs, or mild flu-like symptoms (such as tiredness, muscle ache). If these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
  • It’s essential to remember that the prescribed medication is based on your doctor’s assessment of the benefits outweighing the risks. Many individuals using this medication experience no serious side effects.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe or increased bone/joint/muscle pain, new or unusual hip/thigh/groin pain, jaw pain, or vision changes.
  • In rare cases, this medication may cause irritation and ulcers in the stomach or esophagus. Seek medical attention if you encounter severe heartburn, chest pain, difficult or painful swallowing, severe stomach/abdominal pain, black/tarry stools, or vomit that resembles coffee grounds.
  • While very uncommon, a serious allergic reaction to this drug may occur. Seek immediate medical assistance if you observe symptoms like rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
  • The list provided may not encompass all possible side effects; contact your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any other effects not mentioned above.

  • Before taking ibandronate, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, particularly if you are allergic to bisphosphonates like alendronate, etidronate, pamidronate, risedronate, or if you have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients in the product may also cause allergic reactions.
  • Share your medical history with your doctor, especially if you have esophagus problems (such as heartburn, narrowing of the esophagus, achalasia), low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia), difficulty sitting upright or standing for 60 minutes, painful swallowing, stomach/intestinal disorders (such as ulcers), or kidney disease.
  • Serious jawbone problems may occur in some individuals taking ibandronate. Your doctor should examine your mouth before you start this medication. Notify your dentist that you are taking ibandronate before any dental work. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral care are advised to help prevent jawbone problems. If you experience jaw pain, inform your doctor and dentist promptly.
  • Before undergoing surgery, especially dental procedures, disclose all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products, to your doctor and dentist. Your doctor or dentist may instruct you to stop taking ibandronate before surgery. Seek specific instructions regarding stopping or starting this medication.
