What is Invokana used for
This medication is a prescription medication used in adults living with type 2 diabetes to:
- Improve high blood sugar levels. In addition to diet and exercise, blood sugar levels can be reduced.
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems. It can lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and blood vessel problems.
- Reduce the risk of complications in those with diabetic nephropathy. In those with kidney damage, it can reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease, blood vessel problems, heart failure complications, and increased creatinine levels.
This medication contains canagliflozin, which is a sodium-glucose-co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor. They function to reduce blood glucose in the blood, and excrete excess glucose through urine.

- Invokana 300mg tablet
Remember to follow your doctor’s dosage and instructions on usage.
Farxiga versus Invokana
Invokana and Farxiga belong to the same family of medications known as SGLT-2 inhibitors. This means that they treat type 2 diabetes in the same way.
Canagliflozin is the active ingredient in this medication. Dapagliflozin is the active ingredient in Farxiga.
Invokana vs Jardiance
Jardiance medication resulted in reduced HbA1c levels, lower fasting plasma glucose, and lower weight in a 24-week double-blind trial of type 2 diabetes individuals taking it as monotherapy. Invokana, like Jardiance, showed a comparable impact of improving statistics like HbA1c when examined in conjunction with other diabetic medications or insulin.

These aren’t the only adverse effects that come with it. Other, perhaps more rare side effects should be discussed with your doctor and pharmacist. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor about any allergies you have, medications you are taking, and any previous medical history you have.
Invokana weight loss
While this medication isn’t authorized for weight reduction, it does cause weight loss as a side effect.
Invokana users dropped up to 9 pounds over the course of 26 weeks in clinical trials. If you have type 2 diabetes and are overweight, your doctor may advise you to use this medication because of this adverse effect.
Invokana works by directing excess glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream into your urine, causing weight reduction. The calories from glucose pass through your body and are excreted in your urine, which may cause you to lose weight. Make sure you only take Invokana as directed by your doctor. Without previously seeing your doctor, do not use the medication to reduce weight or for any other purpose.
