Indications

  • Rizatriptan is used for treating migraines, helping to relieve headache, pain, and other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Quick treatment with Rizatriptan can help you get back to your normal routine faster and may reduce the need for other pain medications.
  • It belongs to a group of medicines called triptans, which work by affecting serotonin, a natural substance that causes blood vessels in the brain to narrow.
  • Rizatriptan may also relieve pain by affecting certain nerves in the brain.
  • Rizatriptan doesn’t prevent future migraines or reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

Dosage and administration

  • Before starting rizatriptan, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist and ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you may have.
  • Take this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, at the first sign of a migraine. It can be taken with or without food, but may work quicker on an empty stomach.
  • The dosage depends on factors like your medical condition, age, response to treatment, and other medications you’re taking. For children, the dosage is based on weight.
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • If your symptoms don’t improve, don’t take extra doses before consulting your doctor. Adults can take another dose at least 2 hours after the first if symptoms are only partially relieved or if the headache returns.
  • Children should not exceed one dose or 5 milligrams in a 24-hour period. The maximum recommended dose for adults is 30 milligrams in the US and 20 milligrams in Canada within a 24-hour period.
  • If you’re at a higher risk for heart problems, your doctor may conduct a heart examination before starting rizatriptan. They may also advise taking the first dose in the doctor’s office to monitor for serious side effects like chest pain.
  • Using migraine medications on 10 or more days each month may worsen headaches (medication overuse headache). Do not exceed the recommended frequency or duration of use without consulting your doctor. Inform your doctor if you need to use this medication more frequently, if it’s not as effective, or if your headaches worsen.

Side effects

  • Common side effects of rizatriptan may include flushing, tingling/numbness/prickling/heat sensations, tiredness, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
  • It’s important to remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they have judged that its benefits outweigh the potential risks. Many people using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
  • Rizatriptan may raise your blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure regularly and inform your doctor if it remains high.
  • Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, such as blue fingers/toes/nails, cold extremities, changes in hearing, or alterations in mental/mood states.
  • Rizatriptan can sometimes cause chest/jaw/neck tightness, pain, or pressure, which are typically not severe. However, these symptoms resemble those of a heart attack. Seek medical assistance immediately if you encounter serious side effects like fast/irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, or signs of a stroke (such as weakness on one side of the body, speech difficulties, sudden changes in vision, or confusion).
  • This medication may increase serotonin levels and rarely lead to a severe condition known as serotonin syndrome/toxicity. The risk is higher if you’re taking other drugs that increase serotonin. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you’re taking. Seek medical help immediately if you experience symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, severe nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, muscle twitching, unexplained fever, or unusual agitation/restlessness.
  • While severe allergic reactions to this drug are rare, seek immediate medical assistance if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
  • This list does not cover all possible side effects. If you observe any other effects not mentioned here, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

  • Before using rizatriptan, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues. Consult your pharmacist for more information.
  • Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have conditions such as blood circulation problems, certain types of headaches (hemiplegic or basilar migraine), heart issues, liver disease, seizure disorder, or a history of stroke or “mini-stroke” (transient ischemic attack).
  • Certain conditions can heighten your risk for heart problems. Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, being overweight, smoking, being postmenopausal (for women), or being over 40 years old (for men).
  • This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can exacerbate these effects. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Limit alcohol consumption and discuss marijuana use with your doctor.
  • Before undergoing surgery, inform your doctor or dentist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • The risk of heart disease, liver disease, and high blood pressure increases with age. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially increased blood pressure and heart problems.
  • During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
