Loratadine - non RxIndications
- Loratadine is an antihistamine that treats allergy symptoms such as itching, runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing.
- It also relieves itching from hives.
- Loratadine does not prevent hives or allergic reactions.
- If you have been prescribed epinephrine to treat allergic reactions, always carry it with you. Do not use loratadine instead of epinephrine.
- If you are self-treating with loratadine, read the manufacturer’s package instructions carefully.
- Do not use loratadine tablets or capsules in children younger than 6 years unless directed by a doctor.
- Do not use loratadine liquid or chewable tablets in children younger than 2 years unless directed by a doctor.
Dosage and administration
- Read all directions on the product package or prescription label before taking loratadine.
- Take loratadine by mouth with or without food, usually once a day or as directed.
- If using the chewable tablets, chew each tablet well and swallow.
- If using the liquid form, measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device/spoon.
- Do not increase your dose or take loratadine more often than directed.
- Do not take more loratadine than recommended for your age.
- Tell your doctor if your allergy symptoms do not improve after 3 days of treatment or if your hives last more than 6 weeks.
- Get medical help right away if your condition worsens or you think you have a serious medical problem, such as a very serious allergic reaction.
Side effects
- Loratadine usually does not cause any side effects.
- Contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly if you experience any unusual effects.
- A very serious allergic reaction to loratadine is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Precautions
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to loratadine, desloratadine, or any other ingredients before taking loratadine.
- Consult your doctor before using loratadine if you have kidney disease or liver disease.
- Loratadine does not usually cause drowsiness at recommended doses, but avoid driving, using machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you are sure you can perform them safely.
- If you have hives and are using loratadine to treat them, inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: unusual hive color, hives that appear bruised or blistered, and hives that do not itch.
- Liquid loratadine products or chewable tablets may contain sugar and/or aspartame. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have diabetes, phenylketonuria (PKU), or any other condition that requires you to limit or avoid these substances.
- Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of loratadine, especially drowsiness or confusion. These side effects can increase the risk of falling.
- Loratadine should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before using the medication.
- Loratadine passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
