Indications

  • Methylprednisolone is utilized to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, blood disorders, severe allergic reactions, certain cancers, eye conditions, skin/kidney/intestinal/lung diseases, and immune system disorders.
  • It works by decreasing the immune system’s response to various diseases, thereby reducing symptoms such as swelling, pain, and allergic-type reactions.
  • This medication belongs to the class of corticosteroid hormones and may also be used in conjunction with other medications to address hormone disorders.

Dosage and administration

  • Take this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, usually with food or milk. Adhere closely to your dosing instructions.
  • The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by your medical condition and response to therapy. Different dosing schedules may apply for this medication. If you do not take the same dose daily or if you take it every other day, consider marking your calendar as a reminder. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any queries.
  • Do not increase your dose or use this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed. Doing so will not accelerate improvement and may heighten the risk of side effects.
  • Do not discontinue this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may worsen if the drug is suddenly discontinued. Your dose may need to be gradually tapered.
  • Abrupt cessation of this medication may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, nausea, muscle pain, headache, tiredness, and dizziness. To minimize withdrawal, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used methylprednisolone for an extended period or in high doses. Notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly if you experience withdrawal symptoms. Refer to the Precautions section for more details.
  • Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or deteriorates.

Side effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, appetite changes, increased sweating, or acne may occur while using this medication. Notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.
  • Your doctor has prescribed this medication because they have determined that the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
  • This medication may elevate your blood sugar levels, potentially causing or exacerbating diabetes. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst/urination. If you already have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet.
  • This medication may weaken your ability to fight infections, increasing your susceptibility to serious (rarely fatal) infections or exacerbating existing infections. Notify your doctor immediately if you exhibit any signs of infection, such as persistent sore throat, fever, chills, cough, or white patches in the mouth.
  • Contact your doctor promptly if you experience any serious side effects, including unusual weight gain, changes in menstrual periods, bone or joint pain, easy bruising or bleeding, mood changes (such as mood swings, depression, agitation), muscle weakness or pain, facial swelling, delayed wound healing, swelling of the ankles/feet/hands, thinning skin, unusual hair or skin growth, vision problems, or irregular heartbeat. Additionally, report symptoms of stomach or intestinal bleeding, such as abdominal pain, black or tarry stools, or vomit resembling coffee grounds.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience seizures or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
  • This list does not encompass all possible side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you observe any other effects not listed above.

Precautions

  • Before taking methylprednisolone, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, prednisone, or any other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product may cause allergic reactions or other complications. Discuss with your pharmacist for more information.
  • Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have bleeding problems, blood clots, brittle bones (osteoporosis), diabetes, eye diseases (such as cataracts, glaucoma, herpes eye infection), heart issues (including recent heart attack or heart failure), high blood pressure, current or past infections (such as tuberculosis, threadworm, herpes, fungal infections), kidney disease, liver disease, mental/mood conditions (like psychosis, depression, anxiety), or stomach/intestinal problems (such as diverticulitis, ulcers, ulcerative colitis), or if you have a history of seizures.
  • This medication may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Discuss the use of marijuana (cannabis) with your doctor.
  • Methylprednisolone may cause stomach bleeding, which can be exacerbated by daily alcohol consumption. Limit alcoholic beverages. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance.
  • Methylprednisolone can increase susceptibility to infections or exacerbate existing infections. Avoid contact with individuals who have contagious infections (such as chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, flu). Consult your doctor if you are exposed to an infection or need more information.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about your use of methylprednisolone before undergoing immunizations, vaccinations, or skin tests. Avoid contact with individuals who have recently received live vaccines (such as nasal flu vaccine).
  • Before undergoing surgery, inform your doctor or dentist about all medications you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications can hinder the body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery or emergency treatment, or if you experience a serious illness/injury, inform your doctor or dentist about your use of this medication within the past 12 months. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience unusual/extreme tiredness or weight loss. If you will be using this medication long-term, carry a warning card or wear a medical ID bracelet indicating your use of this medication. Refer to the Medical Alert section for more details.
  • Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly bone loss/pain, stomach/intestinal bleeding, and mental/mood changes (such as confusion).
  • Prolonged use of this medication in children may slow down growth. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Regularly monitor your child’s height and growth.
  • During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly needed. It may rarely harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor about any symptoms in your newborn, such as persistent nausea/vomiting, severe diarrhea, or weakness. This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
