Indications

  • Sensipar is indicated for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in adult patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis.
  • It is also prescribed for the treatment of hypercalcemia in adult patients with parathyroid carcinoma.
  • Sensipar is used in the management of hypercalcemia in adult patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who are unable to undergo parathyroidectomy.
  • Additionally, it is indicated for the reduction of elevated calcium levels in pediatric patients (ages 3 years and older) with primary hyperparathyroidism, including patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1).

Dosage and administration

  • The recommended starting dose of Sensipar for adults with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease is 30 mg once daily.
  • Dosage adjustments should be made based on serum calcium levels, with increases or decreases in 30 mg increments as needed.
  • The maximum recommended dose of Sensipar is 180 mg once daily.
  • Sensipar can be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not crush, chew, or break it.
  • Regular monitoring of serum calcium levels is essential to adjust the dosage of Sensipar appropriately.
  • Dosage adjustments may also be necessary if the patient experiences changes in liver function or if they are taking certain medications that may interact with Sensipar.
  • Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage adjustments and administration of Sensipar.

  • Sensipar can cause low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia), leading to symptoms such as numbness or tingling around the mouth, fingers, or toes.
  • Other potential side effects include fatigue, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), or feeling anxious.
  • Serious side effects of Sensipar may include seizures, irregular heartbeat, or worsening kidney function.
  • Allergic reactions to Sensipar are rare but can include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

  • Notify your healthcare provider about all medications you are currently taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential drug interactions.
  • Attend all scheduled appointments for monitoring of serum calcium levels and other relevant laboratory tests as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • If you develop symptoms of hypocalcemia, such as tingling around the mouth, fingers, or toes, notify your healthcare provider promptly.
  • Avoid sudden discontinuation of Sensipar without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may lead to rebound hypercalcemia.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of Sensipar with your healthcare provider before starting or continuing treatment.
  • Keep Sensipar out of reach of children and pets, as accidental ingestion may cause serious harm.
