Plaquenil is a prescription medication that is used to both treat and prevent malaria. Malaria is a disease that is commonly contracted in areas of Africa, South America and Asia and is caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito.

How should Plaquenil /Hydroxychloroquine be stored?

Plaquenil should be stored in an area that is protected from heat, light and moisture. Keep Plaquenil tablets at room temperature.

How should I take Plaquenil/Hydroxychloroquine ?

Plaquenil is a prescription medication that should be taken in the exact fashion that is outlined in the directions on your prescription label. If your prescription is unclear, contact your healthcare provider for more information. Plaquenil should generally be taken with a meal or glass of milk once a week. If this medication is being taken in order to prevent malaria, your doctor will likely recommend that you begin taking Plaquenil about two weeks before you enter areas where malaria is common, as well as during the time you are in this area and approximately eight weeks after you leave. For treatment of malaria, your doctor will most likely prescribe Plaquenil for long-term use.

When should Plaquenil /Hydroxychloroquine not be taken?

Do not take Plaquenil if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you have a history of vision changes or retina damage that has been caused by Plaquenil or other anti-malaria medications, the use of Plaquenil is not recommended.

Before taking Plaquenil, talk to your doctor if you have: a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, alcoholism, liver disease, porphyria, or psoriasis.

This medication is not recommended for use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding as this medication may cause harm to an unborn child, and additionally can cause death in pregnant women.
