Indications

  • This product is a vaginal ring comprising a combination hormone medication, designed for pregnancy prevention.
  • It contains two hormones: a progestin called etonogestrel and an estrogen called ethinyl estradiol.
  • It’s important to note that while using this vaginal ring can prevent pregnancy, it does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Dosage and administration

  • Before using this product, it is crucial to read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. This leaflet contains essential instructions on proper usage and disposal of the vaginal ring. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • The vaginal ring is intended for vaginal use only. Before insertion, wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Remove the ring from the reclosable foil pouch, keeping the pouch for later disposal of the used ring. Fold the ring in half and gently insert it into your vagina as directed until it feels comfortable. While some women may be aware of the presence of the ring in the vagina, most do not feel it once it’s in place. It will not interfere with sexual intercourse, although your partner may be able to feel it. The exact position of the ring within the vagina does not affect its effectiveness. Keep the ring in place for 3 weeks continuously.
  • If you’re using the ring for the first time, utilize a backup form of non-hormonal birth control (such as condoms or spermicide) for the initial 7 days to prevent pregnancy until the ring becomes effective. Do not use a diaphragm, female condom, or cervical cap for backup birth control, as they may interfere with proper placement. If you start using the ring on the first day of your period, backup birth control is not necessary for the first week.
  • After using the ring for 3 weeks, remove it on the same day of the week and around the same time it was inserted. Place the used ring back into the foil pouch and dispose of it in the trash. Do not flush the used ring down the toilet. If you experience pain or bleeding while removing the ring, or if you’re unable to remove it, notify your doctor immediately.
  • Following the 3-week period of ring use, refrain from wearing a ring for 1 week (7 days). You should experience your period within 2 to 3 days after removing the ring. After the ring-free week, insert a new ring on the same day of the week the old one was removed, regardless of whether you’re menstruating or not. If you don’t get your period, consult your doctor. Do not go longer than 7 days without a ring, as doing so increases the risk of pregnancy.
  • Regularly check that the ring remains in your vagina, particularly before and after sexual intercourse. It may accidentally dislodge during sex, bowel movements, or tampon removal. If the ring has been out of your vagina for less than 3 hours, rinse it with cool to lukewarm water and re-insert it as soon as possible. If it has been out for more than 3 hours, you could be at risk of pregnancy. Re-insert the ring or insert a new one as directed, and use backup non-hormonal birth control for the next 7 days. If you’re uncertain about the duration the ring has been out, contact your doctor for a pregnancy test before inserting a new ring, and use backup birth control for 7 days.
  • If you’ve left the ring in place longer than directed, up to an additional week (4 weeks in total), you will still be protected from pregnancy. Remove the ring and insert a new one after a ring-free week. However, if the ring has been in place for over 4 weeks, you may not be protected from pregnancy. Remove the ring and consult your doctor for a pregnancy test before inserting a new one, and use backup non-hormonal birth control for 7 days.

Side effects

  • Possible side effects of using the vaginal ring may include vaginal discomfort or irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles or feet due to fluid retention, or weight changes. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) may also occur, particularly during the initial months of use. Should any of these effects persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist. If you miss two periods consecutively (or one period if the ring hasn’t been used correctly), consult your doctor for a pregnancy test.
  • It’s important to remember that this medication has been prescribed to you because your doctor has determined that the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
  • Nintedanib may elevate your blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure regularly and inform your doctor if readings are high.
  • Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, such as lumps in the breast, mental or mood changes (such as new or worsening depression), severe stomach or abdominal pain, unusual changes in vaginal bleeding (such as continuous spotting, sudden heavy bleeding, or missed periods), dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Additionally, very rarely, the ring may accidentally be placed into the bladder. Inform your doctor promptly if you experience urgent, frequent, burning, or painful urination and cannot locate the ring in your vagina.
  • In rare cases, this medication may cause serious (sometimes fatal) problems related to blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or stroke. Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience symptoms such as chest, jaw, or left arm pain, confusion, sudden dizziness or fainting, pain, swelling, or warmth in the groin or calf, trouble speaking, sudden shortness of breath or rapid breathing, unusual headaches, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, or vision problems or changes.
  • Very rarely, a serious (possibly fatal) bacterial infection known as toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has occurred in women using vaginal rings. Remove the product and seek medical help immediately if you develop symptoms of toxic shock syndrome, including sudden high fever, severe or sudden dizziness, fainting, unusual muscle pain, or a sunburn-like rash.
  • While a severe allergic reaction to this drug is rare, seek medical help immediately if you notice symptoms such as rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
  • This list does not encompass all possible side effects. If you notice any other effects not mentioned above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

  • Before using this product, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to ethinyl estradiol or etonogestrel, or to other estrogens or progestins, or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could cause allergic reactions or other issues. Discuss these concerns with your pharmacist for more information.
  • Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of blood clots (e.g., in the legs, eyes, or lungs), blood clotting disorders (such as protein C or protein S deficiency), high blood pressure, abnormal breast exams, cancer (especially endometrial or breast cancer), high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, depression, diabetes, a family or personal history of a certain swelling disorder (angioedema), gallbladder problems, severe headaches or migraines, heart problems (such as heart valve disease, irregular heartbeat, or previous heart attack), a history of yellowing eyes or skin (jaundice) during pregnancy or while using hormonal birth control, liver disease (including tumors), obesity, stroke, swelling (edema), thyroid problems, or vaginal conditions (such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, vaginal stenosis, or prolapsed uterus).
  • If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.
  • Inform your doctor if you have recently had surgery, will be undergoing surgery, or will be confined to a bed or chair for an extended period (such as during a long plane flight). These conditions increase the risk of blood clots, especially when using hormonal birth control. Your doctor may advise temporarily stopping this medication or taking special precautions.
  • Before undergoing surgery, ensure your doctor or dentist is aware of all the products you use, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements.
  • The hormones in this product may cause blotchy, dark areas on your face and skin (melasma). Sun exposure may exacerbate this effect. Limit your time in the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
  • If you are nearsighted or wear contact lenses, you may experience vision problems or difficulties wearing your contact lenses. Contact your eye doctor if these problems occur.
  • This medication must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect you are pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. If you have recently given birth or had a pregnancy loss or abortion after the first three months, discuss with your doctor about reliable forms of birth control and when it is safe to start using birth control containing estrogen.
  • The hormones in this product may reduce breast milk production. A small amount may pass into breast milk and could have adverse effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
