What is Mycobutin /Rifabutin used for?

Mycobutin is a prescription antibiotic which may be prescribed with other medications to prevent mycobacterium avium complex in patients with HIV.

How should I take Mycobutin/Rifabutin ?

This medication should be taken exactly in the fashion that is described in your prescription. If you experience stomach upset, nausea or vomiting after taking Mycobutin, take doses with food. Continue to take for the full length of your prescription, even if your infection symptoms subside.

When should Mycobutin /Rifabutin not be taken?

If you are allergic to rifabutin, rifapentine, or rifampin, do not take this medication.

What precautions should I follow when taking Mycobutin /Rifabutin ?

Before taking Mycobutin, talk to your doctor if you are: allergic to any drugs or if you have kidney disease. You may need a dosage adjustment to safely take Mycobutin.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Mycobutin /Rifabutin ?

While taking Mycobutin, do not wear contacts or dentures. This medication may cause a slight discoloration of body fluids such as tears and saliva, which may stain contacts and dentures.

When should Mycobutin /Rifabutin not be taken?

Severe Side Effects: severe skin rash or itching; pale skin, weakness, easy bruising or bleeding; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; or eye pain, redness, vision loss.

Common Side Effects: red, orange, or brown discoloration of your skin, tears, sweat, saliva, urine, or stools; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; stomach pain; belching, bloating, loss of appetite; headache; or mild skin rash or itching.
