How should I take Melanocyl/Methoxsalen ?

Oxsoralen is a prescription medication and should be taken exactly as you doctor has recommended in your prescription. If your prescription is unclear, contact your healthcare provider for more information. Your doctor may recommend that you take Oxsoralen capsules up to two hours before UVA treatments. This medication may be taken with milk or other low-fat foods to prevent stomach upset.

When should Melanocyl /Methoxsalen not be taken?

Do not take Oxsoralen if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you have a history of skin cancer or if you have had damage to the lenses of your eyes due to surgery, injury, or genetic condition, taking Oxsoralen is not recommended.

What precautions should I follow when taking Melanocyl /Methoxsalen ?

Before taking Oxsoralen, tell your doctor if you: have recently gained or lost weight; are extremely sensitive to sunlight; have a skin pigment disorder; have a history of cataracts; have porphyria; have systemic lupus erythematosus; liver disease; kidney disease; or heart disease. You may require a special dosage in order to safely take this medication. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking Oxsoralen, tell your doctor before you begin taking Oxsoralen. There are several drugs that interfere with the effectiveness of this medication; if you are currently taking any other medications (prescription or non-prescription) let your doctor know beforehand.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Melanocyl /Methoxsalen ?

Following UVA treatment, you must protect your eyes and skin from all forms of natural sunlight, by wearing wraparound sunglasses (even when indoors), protective clothing (including a hat and gloves) and sunscreen.

When should Melanocyl /Methoxsalen not be taken?

Severe: worsening of your psoriasis; feeling faint; blisters, pimples or skin rash; severe itching, swelling or skin discomfort; or severe skin redness within twenty-four hours after UVA treatment.

Common: mild skin itching or tenderness; leg pain; anxiety; insomnia; depressed mood; headache, dizziness; or nausea and upset stomach.
